Battery Farms

Battery farms, also known as battery cages, refer to a type of intensive animal farming system primarily used for egg-laying hens. In these systems, many birds are confined in small enclosures or cages that restrict their movement significantly. The term “battery” suggests the high density of animals kept in these facilities, often in rows, similar to batteries stacked together.

Battery farms are designed to maximize production efficiency, allowing for the mass production of eggs by prioritizing output over animal welfare. Hens in battery cages typically have limited space to move, perch, or engage in natural behaviors, which raises ethical concerns regarding their living conditions. The use of battery farming is controversial and has led to increased scrutiny and legislative changes in various countries, with many advocating for more humane alternatives, such as free-range or cage-free systems that allow for greater mobility and better living conditions for the animals.
